Criminals will always be around, there is nothing that will change that as it has been going on since the dawn of time.

As we progress our advice here on SecuriKiwi, we will provide a multitude of options and advice to help protect your house and other property (watch for an upcoming review of the Smanos smart doorbell - may be worth holding off on the purchase) - this post will focus on some generic advice on the thinking behind appearing secure.

Have you ever wondered about how the military secures against all threats? Well.. to be honest, it doesn't.
It does well most of the time and bases are pretty secure, but there are always opportunities for security gaps that can be exploited by a foreign power or a local criminal who fancies their chances.
The Military uses the appearance of security and strict procedures to help secure bases even in the event an unknown security hole opens up, if a place seems secure and scary then people are less likely to try and break in. This gives them time to find the potential vulnerability in their security and address it before someone else does.
You can and should apply the same approach in your life, having consistent secure habits will help protect you in those times when you make mistakes, or something goes wrong.
One example of how this can help; is if you always lock your car, close the gates, lock the front door and switch on external lights so your security camera is on and able to see what's going on.
But let's say one night you forgot to lock your car, it's an easy target for criminals to take the car or items from it - but the appearance of good security would likely protect you from the opportunists as they won't want to go and check your car door if there is a greater chance of being caught.

This behaviour is no guarantee, but it increases the chances that you are considered a 'hard target' and may buy you some time to get faults fixed or catch your mistakes.
This is the same concept that occurs with cars, cyber security, scammers on the phone and many other dishonesty offences.

The appearance of security is enough to scare off most criminals, the best security is your habits and visible actions.
If we go back to the military example, military camps and bases are known for occasional security faults and flaws (See historic media releases from journalists trying to see how far they can get in secure areas, including Buckingham Palace).
To combat this, the military patrols the boundary and internal areas of the camp/base regularly, both randomly and consistently making it pretty certain a hostile actor will be found in the act of breaking in. This may not always work out and there are no guarantees, but the appearance of this concept will put off most casual attempts - you could almost compare it to a really.
This is a short article as I previously mentioned, we will certainly make many more articles about specifics to secure your home and property but just remember to 'ham it up' - make your security checks obvious and slightly overstated (don't go to Naked Gun lengths) even when things are secure and when things go wrong those same checks give the appearance of normality.

Keep an eye out for specific blogs, reviews and further advice to reduce your chances of being a victim of crime!
Make sure you get your friends and family to do the same too.
Stay safe!
